My name is Kaye O’Donnell
I have been drawing for over 33 years. 1996 was the year I found my style of drawing.
I was 22, enjoying the 90s living and working as well as partying around London. If you are young free and single. London was definitely the place to be back in the 90's. I had moved here from Scotland a few years beforehand.
I picked up this pen with a felt tip. I love the way some pens feel in your hand as they slide across the paper and as you write, but this time, I started to draw! I went somewhere I have never been able to go till that moment, a feeling I do not get from anything else.
I'm in a zone, a place where there is calmness, a place where there are no rules or restrictions.
Not like the life around us.
This was my first real drawing since I did my O-level art in secondary school, where my art teacher told me I could not paint. The truth was, I could not paint her way, which I realised when I picked up a paintbrush and started painting at the beginning of 2021.
Back to my drawings, from that day in 1996,
I would spend some time up to 17 hours, consistently drawing, as I had found that, if I did not finish the drawing or painting unless planned that way, I could not go back and finish it, even if I tried. I can not seem to get back to that zone I was in when I started the drawing.
I go to a place, it’s like meditation, to another world, vibrations erupt from the sweeping of the brush,
the movement of the paint as it goes across the canvas, you can see this when you look at my paintings, you will be able to feel the movement of the energy, the feelings that it stirs inside you, just like the feeling I release as I paint and draw, that feeling I get as I realise what I can not say nor express or even express what I do not know myself.
I go somewhere that only my art can explain to you.
I have always used my art as my escapism and outlet to go on with the day-to-day living.
All of a sudden, 22 years had passed, I had my son and that's where all my focus was. In 2018, I started drawing on canvas using artist pens and toying with the idea of getting my art onto t-shirts, as my son and I have spoken about this many times over the years, as well as my friends always telling me to get my work out there.
To me, drawing was my escapism, my go-to place,
but I was noticing the reaction to my work from others who were seeing them. I am like what, wait, others like my work, to be honest, I love my artwork butt I’mmbiaseds.
At the start of 2021, I decided to try painting. As soon as that brush hit the canvas,
I was in a zone. I had no clue where the painting would take me nor when it would be finished, until that last stroke of the brush, when something inside me said I was done. It's like a trance.
